Awhile back when my wife's hard drive crashed, I had quite a lot of luck with these two apps:

I don't remember which one was the one that got most everything back, but one of them did. I think it was the first one. She lost a few things, but I'd say I got 95% of everything recovered.

Defragging would be a bad idea...best to leave things where they are. The last thing you want to do is shift good data into bad sectors of the drive. Recovery tools are what you need.

recently, i moved all my in process work off onto a huge 1 tbyte drive to free up resources for a studio date producing another artist...
anyways, before i got a chance to restore stuff and back things up to dvd, i had two momentary brown outs.....and they cooked the file system of the drive.
so we used linux on a live distro, and started trying to recover data, a tedious process at best...and it seems some of the audio is fragmented and corrupt...
is there anyway to defrag the disc to make it easier to recover?
or am i stuck with what i get?
i can get it done commercially if need be, but first i wanna try and copy out what i can.

my music is a loss <snif.....at least to me> but the saddest loss is the 18 + gigs of music vaporware i have been accumulating in my archive, not including the 4 gigs of obscure vstis and even the shot i paid for.

losing pics of the fam will suck, too...
but all the stuff is there, it is all visible (not to windows) so i am hopeing for the best.

any suggestions that are constructive are welcome.

yah yah...spare me the backup backtalk, i am a fool and all...

that's a given.
what i really need here is advice on how best to salvage my shit!!!!

see, sometimes i have no idea if something is current or not, alot of the time i'm following google links or pages of links i find in the archives and stuff..
so if someone does download from them, it's better..
i just figure posting the stuff, if anyone wants it they can get it themselves which seems less ethically challenging...and if it dissappears, better odds of preserving it for posterity.

Oh, yeah, I'm not suggesting anybody upload plugins here that are still being distributed by developers. I only host free plugins here either when I've been asked to by the developer or when the plugin has been abandoned.

that may be cool, but methinks ethically if the stuff can be downloaded directly somehow it may be slightly better than to possibly redistribute something that could be construed as a gray area or something...alot of times the stuff i come across doesn't necessarily have any EULA, or if so, well, babblefish sure doesn't translate cyrillic russian or oriental hieroglyphs too well~~
if the stuff is disappeared unobtanium, i am willing to upload it tho.
i think the pickin's of what is out there are starting to get thin....but i've thought that for like the last year!!
so i'm down i guess, but is there any way to maybe make it Http rather than ftp?
sometimes it's easier to do the http protocol on smaller files, it's less intrusive on your site and no one needs to install an ftp client..

but whatever you decide is good bud!
