Why you should dither

So I was recording some wine glasses...I knew I was recording at 24 bit, but I kept hearing crappiness in the tail of each recording. After poking around a bit, I noticed that somehow I'd managed to get the default playback setting in Wavelab set to 16 bit, so while I was recording in 24bit, I was playing back in 16 bit (oops).
Anyway, the difference was pretty striking, so I thought I'd post two tails with the gain turned up about 50dB as an example of the difference in quality between 24bit and non-dithered 16bit...
